52 Weeks of Happy 3/52

Hello. Did you all have a lovely weekend? We spent most of the weekend at home, cleaning and de-cluttering but rewarded ourselves with an afternoon at the beach playing cricket.

I can't thank you enough for all of your lovely comments about my new foray into sewing as well as your helpful tips. I love that I can come on here and be in the company of so many like-minded and creative souls. I really appreciate your help :-)

I also forgot to thank you for all your encouraging comments (and empathy) about Flynn's sleeping habits, or lack thereof. He had his 6 week check last week and apparently his 'bad' week can be put down to a growth spurt that often occurs around 6 weeks. Now why didn't I think of that?!? What a goose. That explains all the crankiness between feeds and not sleeping well. It seems 4 years is long enough to wipe some baby things from the old memory. He's back to his happy, smiley little self. I am still working on him loving his cot but as a few of you said, it's early days.

Here are four things that have made me happy this past week. I missed last week so I've doubled up a bit on some items.

1. Once a flower that I didn't really rate highly, the humble Agapanthus is the ONLY thing flowering in the garden at the moment and I just love them. I have them scattered all over the house, I was mesmerised by these beautiful Bumble Bees even though they are invading Tasmanian gardens and are having a devastating impact on endangered Tasmanian wildlife after being snuck into the State 20 years ago.

2. I picked up this cute Vintage Biscuit Tin for $5 (Contents Included). This was from a second-hand store where everything is a standard $2 so I peeked inside and was so happy that I did because look what I found - a huge pile of embroidery threads. I have no idea if this is a bargain or a rip-off but I love all of their gorgeous colours and decided to buy it. You know, for when I get some time to do a bit of embroidery :-) Does anyone know what the numbers relate to?
3. The hot and dry weather has brought the Wallabies into the house paddock and even though we see them all the time up the hill I still get a thrill seeing them out the window in the garden at dusk and dawn.

4. Finally, the purchase of an electric pencil sharpener has brought all sorts of happy to my life, especially after a thorough de-cluttering session resulted in a ginormous pile of blunt pencils to be strewn across the kitchen bench . I tried to resist the urge to sort them into colours but as you can see the temptation was too great.  With most of the house in a general state of chaos the look of them all lined up makes me happy beyond belief. I'm betting they'll be a jumbled mess of liquorice Allsorts by the end of the week but I'll cope with that just fine :-)

I hope you have a wonderful week ahead.

  1. oh happy days indeed at your house! Glad to hear things have settled with Flynn and I hope he gives you enough rest so you can practise your sewing...are are a natural. As for your op shop find...I'd say bargain...those numbers relate to the brand colour number...or skein number i think they may call it. Next time you in a lincraft or spotty take a look at all the threads...they have their own unique numbering system. This will only really matter if you want to match it later. We are getting kangaroos on our block too ...although I think they'll move on once the builders start! have a lovely week Mel xx

ps - I'm off to smiggle to buy an electric sharpener!

  2. Hi Mel

I just popped online for half an hour, and there you were at the top of my blog roll ... will this comment post first I wonder.

The threads are gorgeous! I can think of so many things you could make with them. The numbers will be the manufacturers colour numbers. If working from a chart you will be told which colour threads you need by number not name as there are so many colours to choose from. If you Google some of the numbers you should be able to discover if these are DMC, Anchor or whatever brand. That really was a box of treasure!

Hope you're not too hot in Tasmania. It's snowing again here! And thank you for the get well wishes, very much appreciated :D

  3. Agapanthus are really a beautiful flower. I have one bush but it's never flowered I think it might need a different spot. And your embroidery cottons are just like mind that my grandmother gave to me, I still have them I can't bear to use them as she is no longer with us. I have a feeling the numbers might relate to the colour numbers when you by the thread but I'm not 100% sure about that. I don't think I could have resisted colour coding either, they look great all lined up in jars. xx

  4. I love the way the lady that owned the thread organised them by cutting out those indented strips and her writing reminds me of the way my grandmother used to write. Annie is right, the numbers are the shade of the colour. The colours are a lovely mix. Have a happy week Mel!

  5. Hi Mel, have been enjoying catching up on your last few posts - so relaxing! The embroidery floss is a lovely bonus to the tin purchase & good value too. The numbers relate to the shade & if you ever do a counts cross stitch from a kit they will specify the colour by number. I imagine you will just use the colours as you wish & goodness knows how old they are or if the colours had faded since they were bought. Love from us all in Sydney xo Lj

  6. That tin is a total steal I reckon, what a beaut!

  7. The tin is definitely a bargain. The pencils hilarious! That is pure art teacher you are doing there. In fact I may have to rush out and buy an electric sharpener! Thank goodness only one of mine will still allow covered books. It used to take two full days of contact paper and stickers and a big twitch in the left eye!!!!
Never mind the baby settling so soon. At least you have lots of holders when he needs cuddles!

  8. Love the pencils in their colour coordinated jars! I am a sucker for colour coordination. I would say the numbers on the thread are the colour codes. So if you wanted to buy more of a particular colour for a project you could use that number to make sure you get the same shade. I love the tin they came in too. What a great find!

  9. Really wonderful happy things here! The pencils arranged by colour look so pretty. For what it's worth, I can't put a book on the shelf without alphabetising it. The tin was a terrific bargain, and full of treasure.

I'm off to buy an electric pencil sharpener now...

  11. I love agapanthus' too!! Can't believe that such a bold handsome flower is considered a weed of sorts! And I too love the way you have put those pencils together in all their pretty colors....wish I was that organised....just wish I knew where all the pens and pencils vanish to in our house....

    1. I think that's why I never liked them much because they grow like weeds in these parts. The pencils were found under beds, in the car, down the sides of the lounge cushions, everywhere but the pencil tin!!!

  12. What a great buy at the second hand store. The numbers probably refer to the color number of the thread. Most embroidery and cross stitch charts use thread numbers to relate to the symbols for the chart or pattern. Have a great day. Love the wallabies.

  13. Gorgeous collection of snaps Mel. I had no idea about the bumble bees being introduced or the damaging impact of them, little buggers. Love your $5 find. I think the numbers might relate to colours, as usually thread colours are differentiated by numbers. Someone has obviously wound the thread onto their own cards, maybe for better storage or accessibility. Look at me being all speculative, haha! And just look at those pretty pencils all sorted... it's amazing how quickly they turn to chaos isn't it?! xoxo

  14. I would have done exactly the same thing with the coloured pencils. x

  16. I can't believe you see Wallabies outside your window... all I see are squirrels and deer, and I still get excited about the deer families especially when they bring their fawns by. From around here Wallabies are what you see in a zoo :)

  17. Love agapanthus too! Gorgeous photos Mel.

  18. Wow - that WAS the best find in the second hand shop! Quite jealous! :) How neat seeing wallabies. Agapanthus are every where here too and I actually think the council has them listed as an invasive plant now and they are banned from being sold at garden centres. Love the pencil jars - we have far too many writing implements in this house - I usually end up taking piles into school classrooms. A good time of the year to stock up n them now though through the big school stationery sales!

  20. I think my heart would have skipped a beat when opening that tin of threads up! Though they look so pretty like that I would be scared to use them :) I think the numbers would be the shade/colour. So glad Flynn is sleeping better for you. I found each time I had a newborn I had completely forgotten all those little milestones particular to each age.

  21. What a happy post! So glad little Flynn is happy again. I always forget about that 6 week growth spurt and niggle. I do think things get easier when everything's back to normal and back into routine. Not that we want to wish away the holidays! Your pencil tins made me laugh. I loved my electric pencil sharpener. So efficient. We lost the wire to ours. Heaven knows where it got to. What a treasure you found. Good luck with the sewing. I've always wanted to try but don't have a machine. Can't imagine having a wallaby in the garden. Magical. What happened to the snake? Sarah xx

  22. i bought that sharpener this week too - its made me a very happy mama
(but now I want to sort the pencils like you!)
I wanted a sewing machine for Christmas too but forgot to tell Santa - maybe next year!!

  23. I found that exact tin a few months back and I love it, mine was empty, what a bonus with all those colours in yours. Love your aggies too, mine are only just starting to appear. And the rainbow pencil effect, goodness if i bought Roboboy an electric sharpener and allowed him colour sorting privelages I probably wouldn't see him for weeks. Last week we had a playdate and he managed to spend half of it organising his mates bedroom! mel x
