February

"A Portrait of my children once a month, every month, in 2013" via Che and Fidel

Oh February, you are such a tricksy month! The beginning of the new school year brings so much change and excitement with new routines and activities. If you have danced this dance before you know it is going to take a good month to get into the swing of things before everyone is fully up to speed with what's going on - which day to catch the bus home, which day is library day, news day, kinder day, swimming. If Mummy forgets to pop the slow cooker on in preparation for a busy Thursday afternoon then things can turn pear-shaped very quickly. February is the month where you realise whether or not you have bitten off more than you can chew. If you have then there is absolutely nothing you can do except chew like crazy until the end of term and re-jig things the following term. This year, I think I may have finally, finally found just the right balance and we are managing to find a decent amount of quiet time during the weekdays.

Eleanor: Back into the new School Year.
Charles: Admiring the boats at The Wooden Boat Festival.
George: Mr Serious.
Noah: "Another feather for your collection Mum".
Flynn: 3 Months old, here mesmerised by the Oak Tree canopy above.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

  1. oh mel, quietly I could not be happier that February is over with! It is the tricky month, the month when it all happens and the year is in proper swing! I'd like to think I havn't bitten off more than I can chew but I think I'll need March to assess that! I love your images Mel, you children are beautiful and you have a magical way of capturing something unique in all! Have a wonderful week and enjoy that balance and quiet times too xx

    1. I've plonked them into a glass vase until I get around to doing something else with them. I was wanting to make a mobile out of some, maybe bunting too, the kids were keen on making some dream catchers and I've seen some ideas that make me think sticking them onto a wall would be nice.....any other ideas?

  9. You are so right (even sans kids), February is definitely tricksy and I totally agree that you know by then whether you've bitten off more than you can chew! I'm definitely feeling I have bitten more than I can stomach right now, but fingers crossed things will settle in a few weeks!

Hope you guys are doing ok in all the post-February craziness xx

  10. Dear Mel, your children are a beautiful bunch. How do you get them to stand still long enough to get such lovely photos? My little girl is almost 3 and I am damned if I can get her to stand still for any length of time! My husband bought me a Nikon D5000 a while ago so I really need to get off my bum and start using it, if I can get the subject matter to stand in one spot!
On another note, I really hope you don't mind me asking. Would it be possible for you to email and let me know your Hobart obstetrician? He sounds fantastic from what you've written about him. We found out today we've having our second baby and I'd prefer to use a private obstetrician this time, rather than midwives only. My email is stella.danielle@gmail.com
Hope you're enjoying the lovely Autumn weather in Hobart - my favourite time of the year! However I confess to wishing the days would start to cool down.

    1. Hi Stella, for every clear photo there are a bunch of blurry ones as the boys don't sit still for more than a few seconds! I think the manual settings are much better for avoiding the blur. And I generally take photos while they are doing something so they don't know I'm photographing them because if they see the camera they go a bit silly with their superhero poses. But CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy!!!! Will e-mail you about the obstetricians :-) Mel x

  12. Beeeeeautiful photos Mel. All such delightful little faces. Yes, February was certainly a time of great change around here too. And I get that feeling of biting off more than I can chew much of the time also... though I think you might have a tad more on your plate with your 5 than I do with my 2. Enjoy that quiet time when it comes xoxo

  17. Hello Mel! Thanks for popping over to Thriftwood and a very warm welcome to you! I'm going to grab a cup of tea and have a browse through your blog if that's ok? Love that your little baby is called Flynn ... It was my Mam's maiden name, and my sister and I always wish we'd called one of our children by that name.
