Celebrations

There has been a lot of celebrating going on in these parts the last few weeks.

Firstly, a special little "Chicken-Whisperer" turned 8.

All she wanted was a Bird and more Blyton.

This is "Magic", a green and yellow Budgie. He is a young male as they are apparently easier to train than females. I'm not convinced this rule operates in the 'people' world. He is quite delightful and only makes a racket when the vacuum cleaner is going, which is not as often as it should be at the moment but at least my sanity will be saved :-)

She has been delighting in Enid Blyton books for some time, mostly early and first editions I pick up for a song at second hand bookstores. However, for the sake of completion I splashed out and bought her the entire set of "The Secret Seven". To my detriment though. Halfway through the first book, she comes out and tells me these books are different, that they talk differently and are set in the future where there are cars and battery torches. She prefers the older editions that haven't been changed or 'updated' to suit our modern times. It seems her school teacher would also agree about a return to the older editions. At the parent teacher interview last week, we were shown some of her creative writing and the teacher was very impressed with sentences such as this:

"Oh my oh my!", said Susan and her stick quivered as she heard the peculiar sound.

There was vanilla cake with chocolate icing and sprinkles. We were two candles short but I found two tealights to make up the short fall, which would have been a charming addition had they not been of the toxic Citronella/Anti-Mosquito variety.

We also baked cupcakes to celebrate the occasion with the classmates. She said they had to be gluten free, sugar free, wheat free, colour free, dairy free, egg free and taste free to accommodate one class member with a very unfortunate allergy. That all sounded a bit hard so I sent some regular cupcakes along to school with an apology to go with the sugar-free snake for poor Johnny.

We celebrated with a gaggle of gorgeous 8 year old girls for afternoon tea followed by Disco Bowling. I'm sure I was still playing musical chairs and pin the tail on the donkey at my 8th Birthday Party but times are changing. Anyone else feel like 8 is the new 13?

We also celebrated the end of a successful Winter Sports season. I hope I don't sound like a bad mum for having a small excitement burst at the return of the Saturday sleep-in.

And then last Sunday we celebrated Father's Day. There were handmade cards and gifts to open and a casual morning spent at the beach. Just the way we like it.

Finally, we are celebrating Spring!

The jonquils are on their way out and these are the last of my orange-centred Daffodils. I never know what to do with the last ones - leave them in the garden to admire, knowing they won't be replenished or pick them for the kitchen table?

In theory, by the end of this Season there should also be another family member joining us. But then again, it could well be a Summer baby. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more colour in the garden and the Vegie Patch produce it's first crop.

We are also celebrating the end of another School Term and I'm so looking forward to these next two weeks of School Holidays where we can all relax after a busy Term.

With all this celebrating going on I'm all partied out!

Hope you have a great week ahead!

  1. Beautiful update Mel. Happy Birthday to your gorgeous young writer, what a clever little girl. Loved the tasteless cakes story, it DOES seem that way more and more now, everything we bake needs to accommodate some kind of allergy, looks like a wonderful birthday celebration was had though. Isn't Spring the best!? Really enjoyed your photos Mel xo

  2. I can't quite believe there'll be another one in a matter of months! Exciting. Exciting. Exciting!! Forget the budgie!

I'm also glad soccer's over, and eight is the new 13, because 11 is all sulky/huffy 15. Prepare ye!

Citronella candles made me laugh, as did the muffins.

  3. Your daughter is gorgeous! Happy Birthday to her. I envy you those bulbs. It doesn't get cold enough here to make them worthwhile. Your family shot at the beach is really special. Can't wait to see the new addition.

    1. Thanks so much Mrs Catch. "It doesn't get cold enough" is not a statement you'll hear around these parts in the middle of Winter x

  4. The snake was a good out. I have a nine year old going on 14 but she did dump all the bieber/ New Direction posters she was given in her bin. Thank goodness. I wasn't ready.

  5. I had no idea that they updated some of these old books..that's sad 'cos the language is relevant to when they were written. I loved all of these type of books too and all the old annuals that my granny used to have from my dad and uncle when they were young. It is great to see kids being kids in your photos.

    1. It's mostly the politically incorrect references that have been changed but this is why I love the old originals - they're like a history lesson on social norms of the time. x

    1. There was no Mother Of The Year award for me in that department this year. Next year I vow to conquer the Rainbow Cake, have non-toxic candles and perhaps source out a recipe to cater for little Johnny so he doesn't miss out :-)

  8. Thoroughly enjoyed your update Mel. Our eight year old also received a bird, a young cockateil in need of hand-feeding (just for a couple more days dear). Of course I'm still feeding the darn bird, and he screams at me for food every time I pass his blessed cage.
Weather's warming up in these parts. Enjoy Spring.

  10. Yes, 8 may well be the new 13 - but enjoy those Blyton books while you can! A great post with all your news - and what a great setting for those now finished soccer games. Might be time to put your feet up a bit? cheers Wendy

    1. Yes the Saturday Soccer setting was amazing with the gorgeous Harbour, Yachts and towering Mt Wellington in the background. If only it didn't start so early! And yes, I will try and put my feet up xx

  11. Happy birthday to your beautiful daughter.
It is such a shame the new edition of Enid Blyton books have been reworded for this century. I would never have expected that.
Oh, how funny about the 'everything free' cupcakes. x

  12. My little girl is loving my old copies of Enid Blyton books too. I was planning to buy her a few new ones but didn't realise they were changed. I will have to start looking for the old ones for her too.

  14. Oh Sweetheart, what a gorgeous post. I totally understand the Blyton conundrum. We've discovered it ourselves. I'm so pleased to have most of my childhood versions for the pixies to read. I can't wait for our catch-up. J x

  17. I loved reading this post. Happy belated birthday to your gorgeous girl (your candle tale made me laugh). I'm glad there are still Enid Blyton lovers around - I used to adore her books as a young girl. The photo above on the oval with the view of the boats in the background is glorious! x
