Superman Shakes The Royal Hand

Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall took a leisurely stroll through our little Village today.

This doesn't happen everyday so the Boys and I thought we'd go and extend a friendly Tasmanian "Hello".

There was much excitement and some local businesses really went overboard to make The Royals feel at home should they stop by for a chat and a cup of tea.

Everyone was dressed in their Sunday Best, including the Boys. Noah decided to impress The Royals with his favourite Superman costume while George chose a slightly more understated outfit of shorts and T-shirt with a smear of porridge down the front.

The streets started to fill up and so did the police presence.

The waiting around was getting a bit much for Superman.

When news came in that The Royals were still going to be another hour away, I high-tailed it around the corner to the Sweet Shop and bought the biggest Gobstopper I could find.

This provided the burst of energy Superman needed to fly up to The Royal Jet and hurry The Royals along.

Finally they arrive.

Prince Charles looking spritely and very dapper in Grey.

And then quickly disappear into The Wood Shop where I bought the wooden buttons for my giveaway and then they stopped into The Richmond Arms for a Pint of Beer.

30 minutes later, we finally get to see them up close and personal.

The Duchess smiles at me and comes over for a chat.
The Prince of Wales went to the other side of the road but The Duchess came right up to us and we had a little chat. She was lovely and personable and I shook her hand and said "Welcome to Tasmania, so lovely to meet you, I hope you have a wonderful stay". I didn't curtsy. Should I have? There was no Etiquette Briefing beforehand. Oh Dear.

Superman stuck out his hand too. "And who do we have here?", says the Duchess. "Batman!"

"I'm not Batman! I'm Superman!", says Superman. Yup, my 4 year old Son just corrected Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall. Another faux pas! How embarrassing!

But just look at the way she holds his hand and bends down to chat to him. Just precious!

And did Superman enjoy his first Royal experience?

Why yes he did!

  3. That was such a gorgeous post I read it to my partner and actually LOL'd (and i never write LOL if i didnt actually LOL. Awful acronym) at Superman sprawled out on the ground with a semi wedgy and the giant gobstopper and correcting the Duchess. So cute! I can just imagine you holding your breath hoping he didn't come out with something more controversial! So excited you saw them. Your boys will be talking about this for years.

    1. Yes, I was a little bit worried they were going to say something like "who are you" or "where is the King and Queen" as those were some of the things they were asking beforehand.

Thanks for stopping by Ms George :-D

  4. Hysterical! Love the picture of Noah lying on the ground. Such a pain waiting. Prince Charles obviously regrets not getting your side by the look on his face. Gobstoppers were a brilliant idea x

  6. That is a wonderful story! I think the less formal you are, the better they (their royal heiresses!) enjoy it! It must get so boring being curtsied to ALL the time...If I were a dutchess, and clearly I am not, but I would stop to each little superman and fairy princess too! Good on you all for waiting so patiently even if it did include lollies!! xx

  7. Wow what a special day. Lucky superman!!! Great pictures, great memories for him when hes older. I won the book in your giveaway and it is a beautiful book. The beaches there are the most beautiful I have ever seen. Anyone that comes over to my house looks at the book. Thanks again.

  8. Just catching up on your last couple of posts ... this one's priceless ... and Superman's grin afterwards. I imagine the Duchess was terribly impressed, clearly Batmen are everywhere but it's not every day she meets Superman ;)

  9. What a great story.
I remember attending a Boxing Day get-together quite a few years back and Wallace wore his brand new Xmas Spiderman suit (which didn't leave his body for 18 months mind you). One mother commented to me that she wished she could have been the type of mother who let her children wear whatever they liked (which I think was a bit of a jab at the time), but they grow up all too soon and have to conform I think. I bet the Duchess will remember shaking Superman's hand for a long time to come.

  10. I just love the way she held your son's hand. It has made me like her a lot more :)
I missed the whole thing, stuck at work, but I was told that all those orange bollards were bought especially for the day as they weren't allowed to use old ones with scuff marks!

  14. Exciting!! Love that Superman kept in character the whole time. Our turn tomorrow in Canberra, yay. Not sure if i can fit it in with athletics tomorrow (in the opposite direction) & after meeting Princess Mary & being inches from the Queen last year, not sure anything can top those two!! Love Posie

  15. I was wondering if they came near your place when I saw them on the news! Lovely to see a bit of your town. Having survived to write this post I'm assuming there was no command of 'off with her head' upon noting the absence of a curtsey!

  19. What a wonderful experience I've never so much as seen a glimpse of a royal even though their summer residence is only about 50 miles from my house to theirs! And doesn't your village look so English?

  20. Gorgeous story, gorgeous photos! Its surreal isn't it?! We met the Queen last year when Sam was playing some cricket in the UK and I still can't believe that she shook my hand! And I was such an 'ocker' and said Hi, how ya going? Mmmmm and no cursty either. But she was just lovely! Oh how exciting....they are fascinating aren't they!

  21. The Duchesses PR people should acquire your story of The Duchess and Superman, it is too cute and does a lot for her image. It looks beautiful where you live, I love the formal outdoors setting.
