52 Weeks of Happy 5/52

Happy Tuesday evening everyone!

For those living in Australia, I hope the new School Year has started well.

We had two of the Kidlets starting back only today. The day went well and both returned home with happy smiles. The Twins get their first taste of "Big School" this Thursday when they start Kindergarten so that will be my (our) big milestone day.

There have been lots of happy things going on this past week.

1. I made a Parliament of Owlets. It occurred to me that there will be 4 identical school bags greeting me some mornings and while I was pondering how I could identify them quickly in order to stuff the bags with lunch boxes before racing out the door, I came across this gorgeous Owl tutorial. They are so cute and I thought they would make ideal Bag Charms so I made 4 of them but now secretly wish I made an extra one for me :-). The tutorial provided is super easy to follow and they are the perfect size to clip onto the side of their School Bags and the Kids are completely smitten with their little School Buddies. They come with arms if you prefer and the only other changes I made was crocheting them together instead of stitching and embroidering the eyes instead of using beads.
2. The Flowering Gums are out and are looking spectacular around the countryside. They look quite nice in my $1.99 thrifted vase and seeing the burst of orange around the house makes me happy.
3. The wallabies that I was so excited about in my previous "happy" post because they were now coming nice and close to the house are no longer my favourite animal. In the space of one evening they got into the Veggie Patch and almost decimated our entire crop completely. However, they can't dig and therefore our potatoes were saved and that makes me very happy indeed. The Kids dug up all of the above Dutch Creams and Kennebecs and we have been enjoying them almost every night cooked in different ways.
4. Finally, I bought myself a little present. After dropping the Big Kids off at their first day of School today I shouted the Little Boys a chocolate Milkshake and I bought myself this gorgeous yarn. It's hand dyed Alpaca fleece grown in Tasmania and I just adore the colours. It is the first time I have bought yarn with absolutely nothing in mind to make with it. I've had a little look on Ravelry and think I'll make the "Autumn Scarf". Having something lovely to knit on Thursday after I send the Twins off to School for the very first time makes me very very happy and will hopefully be the distraction I think I'll need. Now I just need to stop playing with it and wind it into a ball. Although Eleanor put it around her neck tonight and said it looked great just as it is. I think she might just be onto something there.

I hope you have a lovely week full of happy things and I'll be back at the end of the week.

  8. The owls are so cute Mel, and I'm totally in awe of the fact that, amidst all your busy-ness, you just whipped them up! I couldn't do that in a month of Sundays.
Good luck with school this week, and happy knitting.

  9. What sweet little owls, such a great idea for the school bags. The dyed yarn looks lovely too, a close friend of mine has an alpaca farm just along the road and she spins, knits and felts with the wool; so gorgeous and soft.

    1. Wendy, I'm a huge night owl - when the kids go to bed there's a good 5 hours there every night that I have to do these type of things, often while I'm sitting in front of the Telly and chatting with Daniel. It's probably more a question of what I'm not getting done when I'm doing these things - the house could do with a bit more attention :-D Maybe I should do a post on this topic x

  16. Beautiful pics Mel. Love those ours, what a brilliant idea for bag tags, my boy would love it. And a flowering gum like that has been on my wishlist for Betsy's garden for ages, just to choose pink or red. Btw possums ate everything in my vege garden except for one burpless cucumber which was pretty yum and completely burpless. I keep telling them in NZ they would be turned into hats but they keep coming back! mel x
