Grow you good things!

Tis done! All 2000 trees, 10,000 cane berries and 13,500 strawberries are in the ground. It was a massive job but of the most satisfying kind with new buds swelling and the first leaves appearing already. We expect the strawberries to be ready by Summer and even though we have a long way to go before we are ready to be open to the public it has been an absolute thrill to get to this point and see the transformation from bare paddock to future orchard brimming with so many varieties of delicious fruit. It is a dream come true really. To get this far in such a tight time frame we had lots of help, so along with Jamie we had a team of 6 people help with the planting, with the final 7 trees saved for the Kids to plant out on Sunday to celebrate the beginnings of our new family venture.

  3. It is such an incredible setting, Mel! I love, love, love that picture of all five of your kids holding the trees. I can just see them in about 30 years showing it to their own children, and looking around at the fully developed orchards and vineyards wondering where time has gone.

  6. Oh Mel, well done! What a huge accomplishment and I wish you good seasons, abundant harvests and pest-free days ahead.
I'm sorry that I missed your last post, and absolutely sympathise. I tell our kids that it's a sad fact of life that they will out-live many beloved pets in their lifetime. They become such a huge part of the family and leave a gaping hole when they're gone. I have a beautiful Rottweiler Ella who is nine, grey hairs starting to dot her muzzle, and I find I spend a few more minutes every day with her head resting on my lap. Time is precious.
I was surprised to read that we're no longer keeping score in kids' sports games. Due to distance our kids aren't involved in any team sports yet, but I just can't believe how we think these days. Why people think that kids can't learn about loss, going without, sharing, (I could go on and on) because it might hurt their feelings. Life isn't all beer and skittles, and I don't think it does kids any harm to learn that!

    1. Thanks Fiona, saying goodbye was so hard. We knew Remy was getting on and knew it was a matter of time but thought we'd only have him around for another 6-12 months. He deteriorated very rapidly over the last few days of his life, so heartbreaking x
