Evening Walks

I love my evening walks. Sometimes one of the children joins me and we enjoy some special one on one time together and sometimes I go on my own. More often than not though, Daniel and I go together once the children are in bed. It's a nice way for us to reconnect at the end of the day and this is where some of our best conversations happen. It also provides a much needed break from the after-dinner mess, which never seems quite as bad after returning from the evening walk.

Since I mentioned how much I love "the golden hour" in my last Post I thought I'd share some photos of our evening walks before the end of daylight savings finishes and brings this lovely ritual to an end.

The twilight in Tasmania is particularly long due to the Island being so far south of the equator. The Sun sets low on the horizon for a good while and casts long shadows along the sunburnt landscape and bathes the surrounding hills in a beautiful golden light. I love listening to the Birdsong, the sound of the wallabies thumping and the wind flowing through the Eucalyptus trees. Sometimes the neighbour's horse comes over to say 'hello', and without fail, a bright white cockatoo feather will catch my eye.

I rarely take photos on my walks but the above shots are moments that took my breath away and made me want to reach into my pocket for the phone so I can savour the moments again when I get hit with bouts of nostalgia. I will miss these walks in a few weeks when daylight savings comes to an end. However, we have decided to replace the evening walk with another equally enjoyable past-time - rugging up on the balcony with a glass of wine and a bit of star-gazing.

Have a lovely week!

Mel x

  6. Looking forward to rugging up and drinking wine too, after the baby comes of course. :) Brisbane has turned on the heat and humidity again and I for one am looking forward to cardigan weather.

Ah, that first photo. It's so perfectly beautiful. Well done. xx

  14. Mel,

Oh my goodness. The light of St Ives is famous for it's quality and colour, but your pictures of a Tasmanian twilight has just blown me away. Literally lost for words.

  17. Mel, I feel like I've just been to an Australian gallery. Your images, once again, are breathtaking. The 'golden hour' is my favourite time of the day too, I love watching the light hit the gumtrees and transform the bush.
I've just written a post on 'large families' (you and I are in the category!), and one of the common comments large families get is: "how do you have enough time to spread yourself around and give each attention?"…..well, now i'll be adding "the golden hour walk with a different child every evening" to the list! Thank you, what a beautiful idea.

  21. You painted a pretty picture with just your words, and then the photographs blew me away. Fantastic! Here we are longing for spring, but the daffodils are finally blooming, so the wait is almost over.

  26. Beautiful. I love the look of horses, but I am rather terrified of them too, seeing that fence makes me feel much happier.

  28. Lovely post Mel. My golden time of the day is the half hour before sunrise when the birds start singing. Pity I am rarely up to witness it!! I really ought set the alarm clock at least once or twice a week.

  33. Beautiful. Every day I think to myself "I should start going for walks" and every day I don't. Whilst not as stunning as the views on your walk we do have beautiful parklands where we live and I really should take the time to enjoy them. Thank you. PS - my hubby would be very jealous if he saw your photos :)

  35. Well if I had scenery like that just a step outside my door, I'd be walking all day and all through the twilight! Stunning photos Mel! Really, I can't believe these shots are from your phone! You have a great eye for a good shot :) We don't really have twilight here ... it just goes from sun down over the horizon and then dark. My relatives from England used to complain about that when they visited, and it wasn't till they mentioned it that I was aware things were different elsewhere in the world. Our time already shifted forward a couple of weeks ago (earlier now), and it was hard to get up in the darkness again! Wendy x

  38. Mel, such utterly breathtaking photos. You see these views every day, wow, I am very jealous, I'll admit it. But when you say walk, how far do you mean? Do you get a babysitter, or are we talking a stroll around your garden? Either way it sounds wonderful, such a great way to connect with your landscape and spend some time with Daniel. x
